Reigning Champions Spain were knocked out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup yesterday after losing their second match of the competition to Chile at the Maracana.
Chile’s Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli marshaled a solid tactical approach (3-5-2) for the South Americans to steal two goals from his European opponent courtesy goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz.
Spain thus becomes the first defending champions to have been knocked out after two matches. Vicente del Bosque’s were frozen by the tens of thousands of Chilean supporters who were bouncing off the walls of the Maracana. Jorge Sampaoli’s side did not only snatched the win but mesmerized the Spaniards.
Chile took the lead in the 20th minute when Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez snapped up possession in midfield and played in Charles Aranguiz. Aranguiz quickly picked out Vargas with a brilliant pass through the centre and the Valencia attacker registered the first goal after sidestepping Spanish goalie Iker Casillas.
Spain were finally crashed down two minutes before half time when Casillas double-handed fist from Sanchez’s free kick dropped to Aranguiz and toe-poked one past the Spanish goalie to show del Bosque and his men the exit root to Maracana.
