A suspected armed robber has been arrested for conniving with two others to kill an Indian businessman at Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region, after robbing him of GH?30,000 and a gold chain valued at GH?12,000.
The suspect, Seth Twum Barimah, alias Oduro, 41, a palm wine tapper, and Akurugu Apelege, 41, alias Dawda Sadat, both ex-convicts, together with Peh Kobina Mathias, a driver, 28, attacked the Indian national at midnight on May 9, 2013 at his residence and robbed him of his money and gold chain.
According to the Agona Swedru Divisional Police, the Indian, Murasahad Rajesh, 28, struggled with the robbers and he was shot in the head. He was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital at Techiman. and later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where he died on admission.
Akurugu was, however, arrested within the vicinity of the crime in an uncompleted building after suffering a broken leg.
During interrogation, he mentioned Twum Barimah and Peh Kobina Mathias, who had worked for the Indian, as the architects of the robbery.
Akurugu and Peh, who were later arrested by the police, were arraigned at the Sunyani Circuit Court A.
Akurugu pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to 65 years? imprisonment, while Peh, who was granted bail with two sureties, is still on trial but Twum had been on the run until he was arrested on Saturday, August 31.
Briefing the media at Agona Swedru, the Swedru Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police(ACP), Nana Asomah Hinneh, said the suspect and Akurugu were ex-convicts who were on remand since 2002 at the Nsawam Prisons but were granted amnesty in 2011 and, decided to team up to continue with their criminal activities.
ACP Asomah Hinneh indicated that Twum Barimah, the brain behind the robbery, had since the incident been hiding at Agona Swedru.
He said upon a tip-off, the police arrested the suspect at Wawase, a suburb of Agona Swedru, around 10:30a.m. on Saturday.
The Divisional Commander said the Sunyani police were notified of the arrest and personnel travelled to Swedru, identified the suspect and sent him to Sunyani.
