Lawmakers invite the former President to defend his statements labelling them as thieves
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been invited to appear before the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges on June 28 over the controversy that he labelled members of the National Assembly as armed robbers and rogues.
Obasanjo had, in May, at the Fourth Annual Conference of the Academy for Entrepreneur Studies Nigeria, in Lagos, said that “there are more rogues and armed robbers in the State Assemblies and the National Assembly”.
Reacting to this, the House of Representatives asked its Committee on Ethics to investigate the former president’s assertion, with Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal saying that Obasanjo will be invited to defend himself before the lawmakers.
Gambo Musa (CPC, Katsina), the chairman of the committee, said although they have since received verbal referral for the assignment, they were officially communicated about the exercise on Thursday.
“When we resume next week on the 21st of June, we will meet as a committee to look at the modalities of the investigation and we hope to commence in a week time,” he said.
