Experienced light heavyweight contender Abdul Aziz Quartey, known to Ghana’s boxing fraternity as The Punisher, has declared that he will stop reigning champion Jonathan Tetteh, popularly called Worldwide, when the two meet for the national light heavyweight title at the Resurrection Fight Night on Easter Sunday, April 5, at the Laboma Beach Resort in Accra.
Speaking exclusively to Yours Truly on Omashi TV, the 28 year old Quartey said the fight represents a career defining moment and the ideal platform to revive his professional journey and claim the title he has long pursued. “Some people shine very early while others shine late. I am never discouraged in life, that is why I have bounced back,” he said.
Tetteh enters the contest as the reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) Africa light heavyweight champion, having stopped Freezy Macbones by unanimous decision in December 2025 to claim the title while remaining undefeated, with all 11 of his professional victories coming by way of knockout. He is 25 years old.
Quartey acknowledged stepping away from boxing for a period to pursue business interests, but said his passion for the sport was reignited through his involvement with World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global Super Flyweight champion Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey, whom he supported through multiple title campaigns. Allotey claimed the WBO Global Super Flyweight title on the same December 2025 card that featured Tetteh’s victory, outclassing his Filipino opponent with a disciplined display.
Quartey trained at Attoh Quarshie Gym and later Black Panthers Gym before joining the Wisdom Boxing Gym, where he now works under Coach Dr. Ofori Asare. His manager, Godfred Oko Allotey, accompanied him to the interview and confirmed that preparations are complete.
The challenger said his intention following a potential victory over Tetteh is to pursue a fight with Seth Gyimah, known as Freezy Macbones, in Kumasi. Co-promoter Alex Ntiamoah Boakye has already confirmed that the winners of the two headline bouts on April 5 will collide in what he described as the Oseikrom Showdown in Kumasi, scheduled for August.
Tetteh, for his part, dismissed Quartey’s confidence and promised a swift response inside the ring. “If Aziz is coming for war, I will cease his fire because I am the current king,” he said.
Quartey added an unusual request during pre-fight negotiations, asking that the victor take the entirety of both fighters’ purses, a proposal that Ntiamoah Boakye declined.
The Resurrection Fight Night card also features Alfred Lamptey against Maxwell Awuku, Joseph Commey against Bright Ayala, Commonwealth champion Michael Abban, and female world boxing champion Abigail Quartey.
Quartey, who hails from Atukpai, said his family remains the motivation behind his pursuit of a national title. “My family also deserves the best and we are going to win and celebrate in style,” he said.
His manager echoed the confidence, pledging to return to the Omashi TV studio with the national title belt after the fight.
