The East African Community (EAC) leaders held the daylong meeting to discuss the current political and security situation in Burundi.

In a statement read by the President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete, who is the chairman of EAC, the leaders condemned the attempted coup in Burundi today while President Pierre Nkurunziza was in Tanzania.

The EAC leaders also recommended that the scheduled elections in the country should be postponed because the conditions are not conducive for peaceful polls.

They, however, said that the elections should not be delayed beyond the mandate of the current government.

Presidents Yower Museveni of Uganda and Paul Kagame of Rwanda attended the meeting.

The meeting was also attended by the African Union Commission Chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, the United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, Said Djinnit, and the Deputy President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

Deputy President William Ruto and senior Government officials were at the airport to receive the President.

The plane carrying the President landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly before 9pm.
