Problem is due to system collapse at Egbin Power Station

Power generation in the country has dropped below 2,000 megawatts, due to a system collapse which has caused none of the six units at the Egbin Power Station to generate at full capacity, an official of the Ministry of Power disclosed.

According to the official, who requested anonymity, power supply had worsened in many states, especially in Lagos, and had affected industrial, commercial and individual consumers.

The source disclosed that the situation was aggravated following the collapse of two units at the thermal station on Thursday, which led to a drop in power generation from 800 megawatts to below 400 megawatts.

Mike Uzoigwe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Egbin Power Station, confirmed that two units were down at the station on Thursday. He, however, said that the two units had been re-activated and all the units were working effectively.

It will be recalled though, that Prof. Barth Nnaji, the Minister of Power, had earlier confirmed a drop in the level of power generation, with his Special Assistant on Media, Odon Adinuba, saying that the level of power generation had dropped below 3,000 megawatts as a result of low water level at Kainji and Shiroro Dams.
