Some employees of the National Identification Authority (NIA) say they are fed up with the ?poor management? at the Authority, which they said is causing the nation to lose huge sums of money.
According to the workers, they have for over a year been going to work without any work to do due to lack of logistics.
A couple of the workers, from the ICT department, who walked into the offices of Myjoyonline.com to register their grievances, noted however that the Authority every month pays their basic salary, albeit very small.
The workers who want to remain anonymous said the same grievances instigated the department?s demonstration on November 23, 2011 where workers involved were suspended and recalled two weeks after.
?We were promised that our grievances would be addressed but about five months down the line nothing has been done and the situation is even getting worse.?
They said a committee was set up to address issues concerning salary arrears and allowances, and equipment to work with, but it turned out to be a charade.
?There are no logistics such as boxes for packaging to work with. Distribution of ID cards has come to a halt for about six months now and no work is going on, we just come to work, do nothing and go home,? a worker lamented.
Another worker chipped in: ?Where it has gotten to it needs management approach but no management member is willing to [assist].?
President Atta Mills and some few residents of Accra received their national identification cards late last year but the distribution stopped abruptly. According to the workers, had they gotten logistics, over 90% persons who had already been registered would have received their cards.
?I think if management sits up and get us the needed logistics to work with, like by now, all those captured in our data would have received their identification cards,? a different worker intimated.
Describing the management style as ?sad”, they also accused management of not willing ?to look after the welfare of workers of NIA? Even the way the workers suffered to get our basic pay, we can?t describe it. Even the salary arrears are not coming, allowances are not coming.?
