Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his coalition government Thursday, paving the way for a new administration as Tusk departs for Brussels to become EU president.
All the ministers will continue in their roles until their successors are sworn in.
Komorowski intends to meet Friday with parliamentary Speaker Ewa Kopacz, the ruling Civic Platform’s candidate to succeed Tusk, on her plans for forming a cabinet.
EU leaders appointed Tusk to succeed Herman Van Rompuy as the bloc’s president last month. Since his appointment, Tusk has advocated a mix of austerity and growth-boosting measures. He is to take up his new post December 1.
Tusk became prime minister in 2007 after his centre-right Civic Platform won parliamentary elections by promising to streamline bureaucracy, cut taxes and lure Poles working abroad back to the country.
