The People’s National Convention (PNC) says it is poised to win the 2012 general elections at the first round, the flagbearer of the party, Hassan Ayariga has predicted.
He believes Ghanaians have experienced the disappointing performance of the two major political groups – the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – and are seeking for an alternative party, which the PNC is positioned to provide.
Mr Ayariga recently dethroned Dr Edward Mahama at the party’s national delegates congress held in Sunyani to the Coconut family in the December elections.
He told Joy FM, a local radio station this morning that having beaten Dr Edward Mahama who had been the flagbearer of the party for sixteen years gives him the confidence that he could achieve an even bigger victory in the 2012 general elections.
“Defeating Dr Edward Mahama is more difficult than defeating Professor Mills or Nana Akufo-Addo because this man has dominated the place for sixteen years alone and you can understand how he was able to spread his wings all over the party and took coverage of all the dimensions. Now Atta Mills has been in power for four years and this is Ghana, people can decide to change their minds at all times when you don’t perform,” Mr Ayariga confidently stated.
He was quick to note that statistics showed a consistent drop in the electoral votes cast for the PNC, the change in leadership and the programmes being prosecuted by the party will strengthen structures, boost capacity for outreach and regain confidence in the electorate.
“Now people are going to look at who is going to perform and not which party is big. It is the people who make the party big not the party who make the people big. So the people can move from the NPP and the NDC because of the policies and programmes and the efficiency,” Hassan Ayariga said.
The PNC flagbearer indicated that the doors of the PNC were opened for unity talks with the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and hoped that such talks would begin after the CPP holds its congress.
