Ghana Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has expressed firm confidence that his side will deliver a sharply improved performance against Germany on Monday, March 30, just days after suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna in their first pre-World Cup warm-up fixture.
Speaking after the Austria loss at the Ernst Happel Stadium, Addo acknowledged the disappointment but insisted his role demanded that he look forward rather than dwell on the result. “This is my job. I try to give the boys a positive result all the time even in the midst of defeat. We have to analyse this game well, even though we have little time,” he said. “Tomorrow we will talk about some things. We have to improve them. We have to improve them quickly. I know that the team has the quality to keep up with Germany.”
The coach pointed to a first half in which Ghana created multiple clear-cut opportunities but failed to convert, before conceding four second-half goals to Ralf Rangnick’s side. He acknowledged that defensive decision-making and the timing of defensive shape cost his team dearly.
Addo addressed media ahead of the Germany clash at a pre-match press conference held at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart on Sunday evening, where he provided an update on team readiness and his tactical approach for the fixture.
The Germany fixture on March 30 is the second of two European friendlies designed to help the technical team evaluate squad depth and tactical cohesion ahead of a challenging 2026 FIFA World Cup (FIFA World Cup) group that includes England, Croatia, and Panama. Ghana’s campaign opens against Panama on June 17, followed by England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick, speaking after Friday’s match, drew tactical parallels between Ghana and Algeria and expressed confidence that the Black Stars could challenge Germany, offering an external vote of confidence in the side ahead of Monday’s encounter.
Ghana’s 26-man squad for the two friendlies includes four uncapped players: defender Derrick Luckassen of Pafos FC, defender Patrick Pfeiffer, winger Marvin Senaya of Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre, and forward Daniel Agyei of Turkish club Kocaelispor. Kick-off against Germany is set for 18:45 GMT.
