Organised Labour in Ghana has officially called off its nationwide strike, effective Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

The strike, initiated on July 15 in protest against the proposed sale of 60 per cent of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) shares in four hotels, has been terminated following SSNIT’s decision to cancel the sale.

Dr Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, announced the decision to end the strike during an emergency meeting held in Accra. Dr Baah conveyed that SSNIT had notified Organised Labour of the termination of the intended sale in a letter dated July 12, 2024.

While calling off the strike, Dr Baah also disclosed that Organised Labour had given SSNIT a one-month ultimatum to engage with them and address all outstanding issues concerning the management of pensions. He emphasised that failure on SSNIT’s part to meet this demand could lead Organised Labour to reconsider their actions.

Dr Baah appreciated the workers of Ghana and all Organised Labour groups for their solidarity and support throughout the strike.
