The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan Constituency, Kojo Adu Asare has said the relevance of former president Rawlings in Ghana?s political terrain depends on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and cautioned him not to lose sight of that fact.
According to Mr Adu Asare, the founder of the NDC will do himself a great deal of favour if he continued associating with the ruling party because his ?strong base? in politics hinges on his continued support for it.
The MP made the comments on Joy FM?s Newsfile Saturday, reacting to Mr Rawlings? acceptance of the National Democratic Party (NDP) as a credible force and his declaration of support for his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings who contesting the flagbearership of the breakaway NDP.
Mr Adu Asare explained his assertion noting that Mr Rawlings? popularity suffered an all time low when he made unflattering remarks about late president Mills when he passed. However, he (Rawlings) regained fame recently when he attended the NDC?s Delegates Congress in Kumasi and their manifesto launch in Ho, the MP claimed.
??And it?s all because the members of NDC have rallied behind him all over again, and I think president Rawlings should take note of that?, Mr Adu Asare contended, saying that Rawlings? continued stay on the political platform depends on the NDC and no other party.?
He insisted that if Mr Rawlings wants to continue enjoying his status and popularity, then she should remain with NDC.
On the former president?s meeting with Nana Addo, the Adentan MP could not fathom why Mr Rawlings could forgive a man he said had dealt ruthlessly with Rawlings in the past but cannot afford to do same with members of the NDC who may have wronged him.
For instance Adu Asare said Nana Addo and the NPP witch-hunted Mrs Rawlings during the Kufuor era, withdrew Mr Rawlings? courtesies and subjected him to humiliation. Yet, today, he (Rawlings) has been able to forget the past to the extent of fraternising with some of their (NPP) leading members.
The MP insisted that if Rawlings felt it was time for political actors to reconcile, then ? I was of the view that yes, reconciliation should start from within. If there is any restitution?that heart that is opened for forgiveness, it should start from home??
?So that all these little twitches, greedy bastards, babies with teeth, and old evil dwarfs (as Rawlings refers to some in the NDC) should have been the first point of call for reconciliation.
This approach, he believed, will show Mr Rawlings was not just interested in being magnanimous to ?outsiders? but to everybody who has wronged him, including members of his own household.
