An obituary is a news article that reports the recent death of a person, typically along with an account of the person’s life and information about the upcoming funeral services. In large cities and larger newspapers, obituaries are written only for people considered significant. In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. Two types of paid advertisements are related to obituaries. One, known as a death notice, omits most biographical details and may be a legally required public notice under some circumstances. The other type, a paid memorial advertisement, is usually written by family members or friends. Both types of paid advertisements are usually run as classified advertisements.

Internet technology has changed the way that people can memorialize their loved ones. Online Obituaries and Virtual Memorials allow family and friends to post their condolences and share their grief online 24 hours a day 7 days a week. These are rapidly becoming popular options for families with members scattered around the country as a way of creating a space where everyone can remember their loved one who has died and can mourn online together. Visitors have opportunities to sign the guest book, even leave virtual flowers. There are many different options for publishing online memorials. Some are offered by newspapers in conjunction with the printed newspaper obituaries or as an additional Online-only obituary option.  Some companies and websites offer basic obituary publishing for free and allow free obituary search. Most Online Obituaries or Virtual Memorials require a fee to publish, however the fees for online obituaries are often significantly less and provide a virtual obituary for a much longer time period than publishing a newspaper obituary. The Online and Virtual Memorials are a more cost effective option. The offerings of Online Obituaries or Virtual Memorials vary depending on the company providing services. Some of the services generally include a certain number of words of text, a place for photos or photo gallery, a Guest Book or condolence book for visitors to submit their condolences, poems, images, Links to funeral homes and florists, ability to send virtual condolence flowers etc. The obituary search will allow to access newspaper obituary links for each state where one can find recent newspaper obituaries.  Many of these newspaper sites have an obituary search engine and some have newspaper archives as well to help locate obituaries dating a few years back making it a lot easier and convenient for public to track and stay informed.
