A truck loaded with onions has ploughed into a passenger bus carrying convention-bound churchgoers at the Kwashieman traffic light intersection in Accra, killing an unconfirmed number of people in the early hours of Friday, April 3.

The collision occurred around 4:00 a.m. when a Grand Bird bus travelling from Takoradi toward Sowutuom attempted to make a turn at the intersection. At the same moment, a truck carrying onions was approaching from the Lapaz direction, heading toward Kasoa.

Reports indicate the truck driver was moving on an amber light when the bus proceeded with its turn. Despite repeated horn warnings from the truck driver, the two vehicles collided with significant force.

The impact knocked the truck off course, sending it veering into a group of pedestrians who had gathered at the traffic light waiting to cross the road. Eyewitnesses described scenes of widespread devastation, with both vehicles severely damaged and multiple casualties triggering panic among bystanders.

The bus was reportedly transporting passengers on their way to a church convention.

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) said the scale of the crash has made it difficult to immediately confirm the number of fatalities and injuries. Investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Further details are expected as authorities clear the scene and compile official casualty figures.
