The finance minister asks aggrieved workers to allow Arunma Oteh resume work
The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Friday, persuaded aggrieved staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to accept the return to office of Arunma Oteh, the Director General of the agency.
Oteh was asked to resume duties by the federal government in a circular on Tuesday after an independent audit absolved her of alleged financial misconduct.
The workers had protested the development on Wednesday, arguing that issues raised against her by the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on capital market probe be addressed first. The workers also protested the alleged ?illegality? of her recall because the circular was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, rather than by Okonjo-Iweala, whose ministry supervises the SEC.
Sources say Okonjo-Iweala told the staff that the recall of Oteh followed due process and would not be reversed by the government. The workers, in turn, asked the minister to ensure that those of them who protested against Oteh?s return will not be victimised.
