Gov. Peter Obi today commissioned the NULGE House in Awka.? He was represented by SSG Oseloka H. Obaze.? Speaking on the occasion, the state chairman of NULGE, Sir Jerry Nnubia urged the Anambra government to pay the seven months arrears of check off dues from 2001 2012; the implementation of LGA service scheme to promote Heads of Local Government Administration to Grade Level 17; to give operational vehicles? to the State and Local Branches of the Union and to give official vehicles to Directors in the Local Government Service as? being contemplated for their counterparts in the State civil service.?
Responding on behalf of the Governor, SSG Obaze said Gov. Obi was doing his utmost within available resources to support local government structures and services. He commended NUGLE and it’s past and present leadership for their contribution to good governance and observed that local governments which represented the grassroots remained the universal bedrock for democratic countries.? On the issue of state control of local governments, Mr. Obaze said the matter was constitutional, since the federating units were left ambiguous in the 1999 Constitution. He promised to convey faithfully the demands by NULGE to Gov. Obi, and remarked that some of the issues were already receiving attention from he State Government.? He hoped that the FY 2014 Budget presented earlier in the day by Gov. Peter Obi which reflected an increase of twenty percent would allow the state to implement the minimum wage fully.Those who attended the event included, Comrade Frank Oramulu, mni, former NULGE President; Comrade Godwin Ibekwe, NULGE National President, Comrade Ibrahim Kaleel, Comrade Austin Ezepue and Comrade Orji Akaji.
