The National Identification Authority (NIA) has firmly rejected circulating reports suggesting that the Ghana Card is now enabled for financial transactions, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 8, 2026, and signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate, the NIA stated that the Ghana Card has not been activated for any financial transaction purposes and urged the public to rely only on official communications from the Authority.
The clarification comes amid growing public excitement over the possible future integration of the national identity card into Ghana’s banking and payments ecosystem.
The Authority, however, confirmed for the first time that high-level discussions are underway involving policymakers and key institutions within the financial and regulatory sectors regarding the potential future use of the Ghana Card for financial transactions. These engagements, the NIA said, form part of broader efforts to deepen digital identity usage and advance financial inclusion across the country.
Despite those ongoing deliberations, the NIA stressed that no final decision has been reached and that all discussions remain inconclusive as of the date of the statement.
The Authority assured the public that any official policy direction or implementation rollout regarding the Ghana Card’s use for financial transactions will be formally announced through its verified channels. It reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the integrity, security, and proper use of Ghana’s national identification system.
