NDC storms Kumasi; Plots for 2012 Polls

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by National Chairman Kwabena Adjei, and other party top guns, on Saturday moved stormed Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, to devise ways to win the impending polls at all cost.

The closed-door meeting held at TUC conference room attracted other party kingpins such as General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, P.V. Obeng, Hudu Yahaya, Dr. Oteng Adjei and Dr Christiana Amoako Nuamah.

Virtually all the speakers at the marathon meeting admitted that things were not good with regard to the ruling party?s chances of retaining political power in the December elections.

The party hierarchy particularly expressed concern about the seeming lack of unity among NDC parliamentary candidates and Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs), which had the potential of denying the party an electoral victory.

The various speakers therefore charged NDC faithful across the country, notably the executives, to intensify grassroots campaign in order to avoid an imminent defeat that now stared them in the face.

The meeting, which started at 10am and ended around 4pm, saw NDC gurus from the five regions including the host, Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and the three northern regions attending.

The paper gathered that aside the national executives and party gurus at the meeting, NDC chairmen, secretaries, parliamentary candidates and MDCEs were also present.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that other strategies that would ensure the NDC retain political power this year, which the paper is not privy to, were discussed thoroughly among the members.

Sources hinted that the NDC administration?s achievements since it assumed political power in 2009 were highlighted so that the party members could factor them in their message whenever they were campaigning.

The challenges that await the NDC in the coming polls were mentioned to the attendants, after which solutions were provided so that NDC members would be well-equipped at all times.

Briefing a section of the media after the crunch meeting, Mr Asiedu Nketia said the meeting was organized ostensibly to help the party mend all wounds ahead of the polls.

According to him, it would prove disastrous for the NDC if it contested the coming polls with a divided house; hence the meeting which he hoped would heal all wounds, notably among MDCEs and parliamentary candidates of the party.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah expressed hope that after the meeting, there would be no friction in the party, reiterating the need for the NDC to stay united to face the election.
