The suspects were nabbed for selling pre-registered SIM cards

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), on Tuesday in Ibadan, arrested four persons for allegedly selling pre-registered SIM cards.

Parading the suspects, Efosa Idehen, the Head of the Enforcement Unit of the NCC, said it was a criminal offence for anyone to sell or buy a pre-registered SIM card.

According to him, it is the responsibility of any potential subscriber to a network provider to register the SIM card before activation, and SIM card registration in the country is backed by law.

Idehen warned members of the public to be vigilant when buying SIM cards and avoid buying pre-registered cards, as use of such could be dangerous.

He explained that if the card had been used to commit a crime, the wrong person would suffer the penalty for such crime.

The four suspects were arrested when Idehen offered to buy reregistered SIM cards from them at prices which ranged between N500 and N700, as opposed to the usual selling price of N100.

The NCC official revealed that the Ibadan sweep was the beginning of a nationwide enforcement exercise launched by the NCC.

Those arrested will be charged to court soon.
