Peter Essien, the Zonal Head of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP), on Friday said the agency has rescued 135 victims from human traffickers in Cross River State.
The South-South zonal head made this known during his visit to the Chairman of Ikom Local Government Area, Tony Ngban, in his office.
According to Essien, 14 of the victims were from Ikom, while 45 others were from Yala Local Government Area of the state.
He said Ikom facilitated the agency’s operation in the state, due to its proximity to the international border at Mfum, Cameroon Republic.
Essien said the Agency was in Ikom to prepare for the hosting of a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop. He therefore solicited the council’s support regarding the workshop venue and accommodation.
Ngban condemned human trafficking and child abuse, describing it as modern day slavery. He commended NAPTIP for a good job and promised that the council would give them all the necessary support and cooperation towards the fight against human trafficking and its total eradication.
