Namibia has made tremendous gains in combating malaria. The number of probable and confirmed cases reported annually decreased from about 480,000 during the 2001-2005 period to just 15,692 in 2014, while the number of deaths decreased from 1,370 to 61.

Other recipients of the 2016 ALMA Award for Excellence are as follows: Botswana, Cape Verde, Eritrea, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, South Africa, and Swaziland.
“Namibia’s commitment to malaria eradication has yielded incredible results over the past 15 years,” said Joy Phumaphi, executive secretary of ALMA.
“As one of eight African nations to have achieved the MDGs target for malaria reduction, Namibia stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished through hard work, determination and consistent financial support in fighting a deadly disease,”Phumaphi added.
ALMA was founded in 2009 as a coalition of 49 African heads of state working across country and regional borders to eliminate malaria by 2030. Enditem.
