Namibia calls for help to cater for refugees

Drought-stricken Namibia called for help to accomodate refugees and asylum seekers.

The Namibian government has set aside 300 million Namibian dollars (about 20 million U.S. dollars) for the period from May to August this year to cater for more than 600, 000 refugees.

In her speech on Monday during the World Refugee Day at Osire Refugee Camp, 215 kilometers from the capital Windhoek, Namibia’s home affairs minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana said the country was finding it difficult to provide care for asylum seekers and refugees.

The minister said the drought which ravaged the country has caused people and livestock to be internally displaced in search for better grazing and water supply.

official figures show that there were 6,200 refugees and asylum seekers in Namibia.

The minister said the refugees and asylum seekers in Namibia were from DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Zimbabwe.

She further said about 30 asylum seekers were arriving in Namibia per month. Enditem
