This year?s Ramadan fasting began yesterday across the Muslim world. The 29 or 30-day religious ritual is observed from dawn to dusk during which Muslims, who are not exempted for reasons of health or travel, must abstain from food, water and other human pleasures.
In Ghana, a Hilal Committee, made up of Islamic scholars, meets annually before the commencement of the fasting and issues statements at the end concerning when the faithful should look out for the new moon to herald the start of the Ramadan month in the Islamic lunar-based calendar.
The fasting is expected to end on 6 or 7 August 2013. In Ghana and other parts of the Muslim world, clerics undertake commentaries or tafsir of the Holy Quran at various mosques.
The National Chief Imam, Sheik Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, will as usual undertake the religious exercise at the Abossey Okai Central Mosque.
