MultiChoice Ghana has intensified its campaign against cross-border decoder smuggling and illegal streaming of DStv, GOtv, and Showmax content, following the seizure of 1,200 unauthorized Nigerian DStv decoders.
The move aims to protect intellectual property rights, secure investments in content, and ensure fairness for legitimate subscribers.
In collaboration with Ghana Police’s Cyber-crime Unit, the company recently shut down illicit streaming platforms on Telegram and YouTube, resulting in arrests.
Alex Okyere, Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana, condemned piracy as an assault on the creative industry, warning that illegal decoders and streams cause significant revenue losses for both the state and content creators.
He emphasized the company’s commitment to deploying advanced anti-piracy technology including digital watermarking and real-time monitoring while strengthening cross-border legal cooperation.
The crackdown responds to rising distribution of unlicensed Nigerian decoders in Ghana, which violates National Communications Authority (NCA) regulations requiring authorization for decoder imports. Okyere outlined a four-pillar strategy: technological countermeasures, international law enforcement partnerships, criminal prosecutions, and public education about piracy risks like security vulnerabilities and service instability. MultiChoice also pledged to enhance legitimate service value through competitive pricing and flexible packages.
The company urged consumers to reject piracy, citing severe penalties including fines and imprisonment, and stressed that supporting legal services sustains Ghana’s creative economy and local jobs. “This fight safeguards the future of an industry where creators deserve fair compensation,” Okyere stated.
