Peter Okoye has once again shut the door firmly on any prospect of a P-Square comeback, delivering his clearest signal yet that one of Africa’s most celebrated music duos will not perform together again.

Responding to online speculation about the group’s future, the singer, who performs as Mr P, wrote: “There will be nothing like P-Square forever. There’s time for everything,” declaring his intention to define his musical identity entirely on his own terms with the words “I am my own Square.”

P-Square, comprising identical twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, rose from Jos to become one of Africa’s most dominant music acts, known for their precise choreography, chart-topping Afrobeat records, and a creative partnership that shaped a generation of Nigerian popular music.

The brothers first split in 2017 after years of behind-the-scenes tension over management and financial decisions. They reunited publicly in November 2021, releasing new singles and announcing a 100-city world tour, before splitting again in 2024 when unresolved personal and creative differences resurfaced.

The second breakup was more acrimonious than the first, with Peter accusing Paul and their elder brother Jude Okoye of consistently undermining his contributions to the group and disrespecting his wife, while Paul alleged that Peter had initiated the split by text message and filed a petition against him with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The royalties dispute has since moved to the courts, with Peter testifying in Lagos as a key witness in a case alleging the diversion of P-Square earnings into an unauthorised company allegedly set up by Jude Okoye and his wife.

Both brothers have since leaned fully into their solo careers, with Peter telling Cool FM: “We tried, but it’s not working,” and urging fans to respect their decision and support their individual paths going forward.
