Eric Gerets ponders his future with Morocco but keen to stay on

Morocco’s Belgian coach Eric Gerets described the last twenty minutes of the match against Gabon on Friday as one of the worst in his coaching career.

The 58-year-old coach, who also handled Marseille between 2007 and 2009, was answering questions on the team’s dramatic defeat.

“I can say that on a different day, we could have easily won the match. We had tactical problems on the field; I tried the 4-3-3 formation which we have used before and made my players comfortable,” Gerets explained.
“We did not impose our style of play; my players just booted the ball upfront,” the Belgian remarked.

“The truth is we cannot hide, we have been eliminated in the first round. But in such tournaments, weaker countries can always spring surprises. We are not alone; Senegal were among the favourites along with Cote d’ Ivoire but they are out.”
