Kobina Amakye
A Cape Coast Magistrate Court presided over by Kwame Ohemeng Mensah has remanded 40-year-old Kobina Amakye into custody for setting six children on fire with a home-made bomb last Sunday.
Kobina Amakye from Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) District of the Central region set the six children on fire because they were playing in his backyard.
Amakye, whose plea was not taken, was remanded into prison custody to re-appear on May, 16, 2012.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Francis Okoom, said on April 22, 2012, around 2:00pm, Amakye set fire to six children who were playing behind his house, with the excuse that they were disturbing him.
The fisherman’s actions led to the death of a 10-year-old boy, Kweku Mensah.
Chief Inspector Okoom stated that Amakye, who claimed the children were disturbing him, took a gallon of premix fuel, added some cement papers, mixed them in a container and then threw it into the midst of the children.
Prosecution noted that one of the children did not get hurt while the four victims whose conditions were critical were sent to the Moree Government Hospital and later transferred to the Central Regional Hospital.
Mensah’s body was also deposited at the Central Regional Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The chief Inspector stated that Amakye, after committing the crime, went into hiding till the next morning when the police received information that he was hiding around the Cape Coast Castle, where he was later arrested.
