According to the organiser, Image and Likeness, the statue is in recognition of the former French captain?s brilliance on the field of play as well as his influence on the lives of children in his numerous roles as an ambassador.

The expectedly high profile ceremony is also in honour of the UNICEF Goodwill ambassador, and will witness several presentations on both aspects of his life as a footballer and an international ambassador.

Designer of the statue, Dr Gerry Waldron stated that ?the decision to honor the Ghanaian born French star is to reflect on his personality and uniqueness, celebrate the difference in him and what he has achieved, his contribution to his community and country.?

The legend played a key role in the famous charismatic French team which won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 European Championship.

Later, the central defender led France to victory in the Confederations Cup held in South Korea and Japan in 2001, a feat he repeated two years later in France.

He owns the Marcel Desailly Investment Limited and the Lizzy Sports Complex which houses a training center and a football academy for talented footballers.
