South Africa’s trade union Solidarity announced that 80 of the Mango airline’s 100 pilots embarked on strike on Monday over salary disagreements.
Flight captains and first officers working for Mango, South Africa’s low cost airliner, started the strike at 5 a.m. local time after negotiations collapsed. Solidarity deputy General Secretary Deon Reyneke stated that they met Mango management on Sunday and they reached a stalemate.
“Notwithstanding the reality that Mango pilots are paid significantly less than the industry standard, management showed no interest whatsoever to negotiate with its employees,” Reyneke said.
Mango had not responded to Xinhua’s inquiry. However, it posted on their facebook page that they have cancelled 10 flights and accommodated passengers in other flights.
“Mango Airlines would like to assure all our Guests that we are working to make sure they reach their destinations today. All passengers have been accommodated and we will advise of any delays or cancellations via SMS, email or at the check-in counters. Please proceed as normal to the check-in counter should you not receive prior communication,” said the airline. Enditem
