Makerere University guild has dissolved the students’ representative committee, the Guild Representative Council, to pave way for the electoral process of the next cabinet.
During a meeting last week, all 67 members of the GRC from different colleges and halls of residence were disbanded. Mr Deogratious Kirya was also appointed the new electoral commission chairperson to replace Mr Simon Peter Musangala.
The guild president, Mr Denis Onekalit Amere, said the move is aimed at respecting the constitution which stipulates that dissolution of the GRC and appointment of a new electoral commission should take place a week before nomination of candidates commences.
“I strongly believe that the new chairperson will perform up to expectation. He was a candidate so we don’t expect him to be biased with any candidate,” Mr Onekalit told Daily Monitor.
Mr Onekalit (FDC) was elected in March last year after beating six opponents in an election considered to be one of the fairest and transparent, the 89-year old institution has seen in the recent past.
Mr Kirya promised to learn from his predecessor to ensure that the elections are violence-free. “We no longer need violence but peace. The university being a gauge for the country so whatever happens here is seen to be happening to the rest of the country,” Mr Kirya said.
Meanwhile, cabinet ministers are to remain working until a new guild is sworn in for they still have running projects.
