Mr Robert Amiteye, Programmes Coordinator, Environmental Health Club , told the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a tree planting and growing exercise, that refuse separation, no littering , tree planting and many others which do
not need big budgets would save the nation a lot resources .
As part of this year’s World Environment Day celebration, the Environmental Health Club, together with pupils of Chrisdof International School and Community Seven No. 2 Junior High School engaged in a tree growing exercise around the Community Seven football park popularly known as the Valco Park.
This year’s focus was on tree growing to serve as windbreaks, beautification and its biological function of absorbing carbon and releasing oxygen.
Headmistress of Community Seven No. 2 Basic School, Mrs. Fatima Antiaye, led her school in the exercise while
Ghana’s Most Beautiful 2009 queen, Lamisi Sam-Awinonga, also helped out.
Mr. Amiteye reminded participants that the World Environment Day is not just an event to celebrate the Environment but should be a constant reminder to adopt a daily environmentally friendly culture.
He noted that almost all government schools in Tema do not have a sustainable way of dealing with waste.
This is due to the fact that the schools do not have bins or skips “let alone to talk of separation of waste at source on their various compounds”
He thanked the media for increasing awareness on environmental issues and called for law enforcement to support a responsive green society.
