Lawmaker expresses worry over Chevron’s platform fire

WARRI – THE Federal Government has been called upon to assist Chevron Nigeria to put off the fire incident that has occurred in one of the conglomerate’s oil rigs located off the coast of Bayelsa State.
This view was expressed over the weekend at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, while speaking to our correspondent by Mr. Daniel Reyenieju who represents Warri Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives.
Reyenieju who is also a member of the House Committee on Petroleum (up-stream) said that the longer the fire lasts, the more grievous the environmental impact on the area, and even adjoining communities, waters and lands.
Reneyieju said: “The Federal Government must intervene directly by mustering and deploying all its international resources, good will and connections to come to the aid of Chevron just like the way in which the Federal Government of the United States of America got involved when there was a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
“This should not be the time to apportion blames, after all no oil company will wish itself to be confronted with such a disaster.”
