The police on Monday arraigned one Abdullahi Haruna,30, before an Abuja Grade Two Area Court in Kado on a two-count charge of theft and escape from lawful custody.
The police prosecutor, Sgt. Abdullahi Alhassan told the court that one Mr Samuel Omwaegbu reported the matter at the Mabushi Police Station on June 6.
Alhassan said that the complainant had reported that he kept inside his bag a laptop, Samsung galaxy phone, a GLO modem, drawing books and other site records.
He said that the complainant put the cost of the items stolen from his office at Katamkpe road, Jahi 2, Abuja at N154, 000.
He said that Haruna of the same address was employed by the complainant to guard and secure the place.
He said that the complainant on returning to site discovered that the accused had opened the office with the spare key in his possession and made away with his bag.
Alhassan said that the accused was arrested and during police interrogations escaped through the window, but was chased and rearrested.
The police prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of sections 288 and 172 of the Penal Code.
Sections 288 and 327 carries a seven-year maximum sentence or with fine or both each.
The accused denied the charge of theft, but pleaded guilty to the charge of escape from lawful custody.
The presiding officer, Mr Ahmed Ado granted the accused bail in the sum of N10, 000, with one surety in like sum on the first charge.
He was however sentenced to two weeks imprisonment or a fine of N500 on the second charge of escape from lawful custody.
He adjourned the case to July 7 for continuation of hearing on the first charge.
