The World Bank has begun funding a small town water system project at Kpabi, one of the largest communities in the East Gonja District (EGD) to provide potable water to residents.
The Bank is also funding the rehabilitation of 25 bore holes to expand Salaga small town water system to ensure that the people got access to potable water.
Mr Bashiru Shahadu, leader of Water and Sanitation Team of the EGD, who stated this when presenting a report on the trends and patterns in water service delivery in EGD at the fourth Northern Regional (N/R) Learning Alliance Platform Meeting in Tamale, said the move was to expand access to clean water amongst residents.
The meeting was to enable members of the N/R Learning Alliance Platform to assess the findings from second round of functionality and service monitoring and baseline household survey of water users? satisfaction of water services in EGD.
The N/R Learning Alliance Platform, hosted by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and Triple-S Ghana Project of the International Water and Sanitation Centre, is a group of public agencies, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations engaged in water and sanitation, who meets to discuss and share ideas on improving water and sanitation at some selected districts in the region.
Mr Shahadu said the EGD had also allocated funds to drill additional boreholes this year in various communities within the district.
He said even though access to water amongst residents in the district was improving, the figure was not encouraging stating that only 20 per cent of residents had access to potable water in 2011, a figure which rose to 26 per cent in 2012.
He assured that the district would continue to allocate resources to increase the district?s small town water supply system to improve access to water amongst the residents.
He called for stakeholder collaboration to improve water situation in the district.
Mr Jeremiah Atengdem, Regional Learning Facilitator in-charge of Triple-S Ghana Project said effective stakeholder involvement in the project would ensure accuracy of data to inform further investment in the sector. GNA
