The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has taken steps to move some transport operators who hitherto had crowded in and around the Kejetia bus terminal and those operating at unapproved areas of the city, causing a lot of vehicular and human congestion to the newly developed satellite market, the Afia Kobi Market.
As part of the initiative, vehicles operating to the Western and Central Regions — mainly Asankragua, Sefwi Bekwai, Tarkwa, Wassa-Akropong, Takoradi, Enchi among others — close to the ?ever-busy? Kejetia area of the central business district are part of those affected by the exercise.
Other transport groups operating to the three northern regions and scattered across the Kumasi city are to be relocated to the Suame Hill Top terminal.
Addressing the Media, the Coordinating Director of KMA Mr. Solomon Asiamah said the exercise will ensure free-flow of traffic in the Kumasi Metropolis, particularly the central business district which is often choked with long queues of vehicular and human traffic.
He said measures have been put in place to ensure that the various transport groups relocated to the Afia Kobi Market will not return to create congestion.
He noted that although the move is likely to affect revenue generated from the operators, he the temporary loss will be compensated for once activities of the various transport groups are streamlined as is being pursued by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
He said revenue made by the KMA since taking over from the previous management, FREKO FD Enterprise Limited, is very encouraging despite some minor decline during weekends.
Some leading members of the affected transport operators at the Kejetia terminal appealed to the city authorities to put proper mechanisms in place to strengthen the security in the Afia Kobi Market.
