Two naval officers were killed in the attack that led to the kidnap

Dutch group, Sea Trucks Group, have announced the release of four foreigners kidnapped by pirates off Nigeria’s coast. The announcement was made on Thursday.

The pirates attacked a ship being used by an oil servicing company in the waters off southeastern Nigeria, killing two Nigerian naval guards and kidnapping the foreigners.

The attack took place around 33 nautical miles off the coast of Bonny, Nigeria’s main oil export terminal.

“We can confirm that our four kidnapped crew were released last night and that they are OK,” Sea Trucks spokeswoman Corrie van Kessel said in an email.

Nigeria’s oil-rich Gulf of Guinea is second only to the waters off Somalia for the risk of pirate attacks, which drives up shipping insurance costs.
