The ninth meeting of the guarantors of peace, security and cooperation (PSC) framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has resolved to advance stability in the vast central African nation.
The regional forum which was held in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital on Wednesday and attended by representatives of the guarantor institutions of PSC, resolved to back diplomatic efforts aimed at ending security challenges in eastern DRC.
“They agreed to continue to promote and fully support the effective implementation of non-military solutions needed to address the root causes of conflicts,” the representatives said in a communique issued in Nairobi on Thursday.
The Nairobi forum sought to assess the success of multilateral initiatives aimed at reversing the deteriorating security situation in eastern DRC, linked to attacks by armed groups including the March 23 (M23) Movement and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
The representatives said that military interventions should be backed by a robust mediation process to end strife and insecurity in the eastern DRC.
They committed to stepping up support to strengthen peace, security and economic development in the eastern part of DRC, and avert negative spill-over to neighboring countries.
Other resolutions endorsed by peace guarantors for the eastern DRC included support for high-level political advocacy to promote sustainable management of natural resources as a precondition for lasting stability.
Continuous support for youth and women-led conflict resolution initiatives to stabilize eastern DRC and spur inclusive growth was also a key highlight of the Nairobi forum. Enditem
