Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) workers in Kano State have embarked on an indefinite strike to protest non-payment of their July salary and deduction of 7.5 percent of their salaries as pension contribution.

The main gate of the company?s headquarters on Post Office Road was locked, and Muhammad Musa, Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees in the state, told journalists that the strike was in compliance with a directive from its national headquarters.

“We decided to join the strike in order to press for the reversal of the decision taken on the deduction of our salaries,” he said.

Muktari Baffa, Principal Manager, Public Affairs of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, said the deduction was directed by the Federal Ministry of Power.

“The deduction is in compliance with the 2004 Pension Reform Act,” he explained.
