Fifteen Ghanaian journalists wrapped up a pioneering fellowship program Saturday focused on improving coverage of Ghana-China relations through balanced reporting and cultural understanding.

The 12-week Ghana-China Media Fellowship 2025 concluded on August 30, marking the end of an intensive program organized by the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory. Participants from television, radio, print and digital outlets across the country took part in weekly lectures, Mandarin classes, company visits and meetings with diplomatic officials.

Paul Frimpong, ACCPA’s executive director, praised the journalists for their dedication during the three-month program. He stressed that their training should now lead to more informed media coverage of bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

“The media holds power in shaping public perception,” Frimpong said during closing remarks. “This fellowship was designed to provide not just information, but immersion, engagement, and critical context.”

The program took fellows inside Chinese companies operating in Ghana, including China State Hualong Construction Ghana Ltd. They also met with Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa and visited cultural institutions to gain deeper insights into China’s presence in Ghana.

Several participants called the experience transformative. One journalist described it as “enlightening and game-changing,” while others thanked ACCPA for creating a platform that connected media work with diplomacy and development issues.

The fellowship stands out as Ghana’s first program of its kind. Rather than limiting instruction to classroom settings, organizers emphasized hands-on learning through field visits and direct conversations about Africa-China partnerships.

ACCPA presented completion certificates to all participants during a brief ceremony. The organization plans to expand the fellowship in future years as part of its mission to develop informed African perspectives on international relations.

The program reflects growing attention to how African media covers China’s expanding economic and political ties across the continent. With Chinese investment and trade partnerships increasing throughout Africa, training journalists to report accurately on these relationships has become a priority for media development organizations.
