The new design by award-winning Japanese architect Kengo Kuma will replace a cancelled previous design by Zaha Hadid.
Earlier this month, a long-running row over who would pay for Japan’s Olympic stadium was resolved with a cost-sharing agreement between the local and national governments.
The new stadium will be built on the same site as the flagship venue used for the 1964 Olympics, which has already been demolished.
