Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive partnership during an address to Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday.
This strategic upgrade aims to deepen cooperation across trade, energy, infrastructure, and technology between the two democracies.
“India is proud to stand with Ghana as a reliable partner,” Modi declared to lawmakers who applauded the move. The framework formalizes collaboration across eight priority sectors including agriculture, health, and education while fostering private-sector engagement. This builds on 2024 bilateral trade exceeding $2.6 billion, where Indian exports of pharmaceuticals and machinery balanced Ghanaian gold and cocoa shipments.
The partnership specifically targets high-value investments and knowledge transfer. Modi emphasized digital transformation and skills development as critical components, aligning with Ghana’s industrialization goals under President John Mahama’s administration. India committed to supporting infrastructure development and capacity-building initiatives.
Analysts view the agreement as a significant step in South-South cooperation, potentially reshaping economic ties in West Africa. The accord creates structured pathways for Indian technology firms to support Ghana’s digitalization drive while facilitating market access for Ghanaian commodities beyond traditional raw materials.
