Say there may be no need for foreign-based players
Home-based players in the Super Eagles have reassured Nigerians of outstanding performances which will make the nation proud in their upcoming matches for the national team.
The players, who made their determination known during the team’s interactive session with the media in Abuja on Wednesday, said there may be no need to invite the foreign-based players as they have the capability to do well for the country.
Speaking at the session, Azubuike Okey, a defensive midfielder for Niger Tornadoes, based his confidence in the ability of the home-based players in the team on the performance of the Nigerian Premier League clubs in the last season.
“The home-based players are getting better and we have what it takes to form the nucleus of the national team because the league clubs did well last season, and right now they are doing great,” he said.
“We have quality players who can also play good football. So, I think we can do without the foreign-based players.”
Sunday Mba of Warri Wolves said the Eagles, who have been in camp in Abuja since May 6, had been training hard to make a mark in their upcoming matches.
The team has been preparing for matches against Peru, Namibia, Malawi and Rwanda.
The striker said with the full support of Nigerians, the team would score goals and make the nation proud against their opponents.
“We have been preparing hard, and I am sure that with the home-based players we have in camp presently, there is no cause for alarm at all,” he said.
“I can say that we will not disappoint, as we have the capabilities to do what is necessary if we are given the chance.”
Eagles will play an international friendly match against against Peru on May 23 in Lima, and Namibia on June 3 in Calabar in a 2014 World Cup qualifier.
They will then face Malawi in Blantyre on June 9 in another 2014 World Cup qualifier, before meeting Rwanda on June 17 in Calabar in a Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
