Guru Reveals He Returned to School to Fulfil His Parents’ Wish

Ghanaian hiplife rapper Maradona Adjei Yeboah, widely known as Guru, has disclosed that his decision to return to university after years of music success was driven not by personal ambition but by a desire to honour his parents, who had long wanted him to complete his degree.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based UTV, the “Lapaz Toyota” hitmaker said his parents had invested in him and held onto the expectation that he would earn a university qualification regardless of his achievements in the entertainment industry.

“My parents have always wanted me to finish my degree so I decided to do this for them,” he said.

Guru revealed that he initially gained admission to study Information Technology at the University of Ghana but eventually switched to Political Science and Information Studies after falling behind on lectures due to the delay between his admission and when he actively began attending classes.

He said his interest in political science grew from a genuine passion for global governance and political systems, particularly his admiration for the United Nations (UN) and a desire to deepen his understanding of how Ghana’s political structures operate.

The rapper, who served as the 67th Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of Ghana during the 2024/2025 academic year, winning the September 2024 elections with 9,455 votes representing 50.7 percent of ballots cast, has since completed his degree.

Despite widespread speculation that he may eventually contest the parliamentary seat for Nkoranza, Guru was clear that no such plans exist at this time.

“I’ve not conceived the idea to contest. Even my MP does not pick my calls. I’ve been told by a number of people that I’ll go to Parliament but I’ve not given it a thought yet,” he said.

He explained that his decision to contest the SRC presidency was motivated purely by a desire to apply what he had learned academically, not by any underlying political ambition.

“I became SRC president because I wanted to practicalize what I learned in school, not because I have a political ambition. People have asked me to contest for a parliamentary seat but I have not given it a thought yet,” he added.

While Guru did not rule out a future role in national politics, he was firm that contesting a parliamentary seat is not on his agenda for now.
