Governor Peter Obi said quality human infrastructure was critical in the efforts to achieve the vision of the Millennium Development Goals. ?Governor Obi was speaking while presenting a cheque of N30m to Faith Hospital and Maternity of Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion to Bishop Alexander Ibeziem for the upgrade of facilities in the Hospital. He earlier presented another cheque of the same amount for the building of a maternity at Awba-Ofemili. The Governor said the gesture was in line with the existing partnership with the Church in Education and Health sectors to produce quality human capital to drive the future of the society. ?
The Anglican Bishop of Awka, Right Rev. Dr Alexander Ibeziem, while thanking the Governor for the gesture expressed the hope that future administration would fellow his footsteps to change the society for better. ?
The Governor, who also visited Regina Caeli Hospital, Awka assured that the State Government would assist the hospital to upgrade its facilities. ?Speaking after an inspection visit to the hospital, Governor Obi said the intervention would enhance improved service delivery to compliment the work of the State Teaching Hospital.
Governor Peter Obi who earlier visited Father Joseph Secondary School, Agulueri and was shocked that only 5 students were in school between?7:45 and 9am?he was in the school warned that the State government will deal decisively with teachers who come late to school. ?He later presented a cheque of N20m to Archbishop Valerian Okeke for the continued improvement of school infrastructure.
Addressing teachers of the school, Governor Obi expressed disappointment with their poor attitude to work. He reminded the teachers that as purveyors of knowledge, they had the primary responsibility of giving the students positive orientation He announced scholarship award for the five students who came to school that would carry them throughout their secondary school education as part of the State Government motivation towards excellence.
Responding the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke thanked the Governor for his foresight and future oriented governance noting that one of his greatest achievements was returning school to the church which he said has engendered healthy competition among schools. ?Most Reverend Okeke explained that proper education was fundamental for progress, self fulfilment and human dignity as well as equip children adequately to compete with their contemporary. ?He noted that children of the State would continue to reap the fruits of Governor?s good governance and huge investment in upgrading infrastructure in schools to international standard.
In their separate speeches, two of the benefiting students, Master Victor Menkiti and Master Celestine Ekwealor while thanking the Governor for the kind gesture assured that they would justify the confidence through hard work.
