Glo Mobile Ghana, a subsidiary of Globacom International of Nigeria, has officially launched its commercial operations in the country.
The company, which is the sixth mobile operator in the country, promises unparalleled voice and data services buoyed by the successful landing of its Glo-1 submarine cable in 2009.
“Now we are ready to provide Ghana with the most affordable and reliable telecommunications services you have not just been yearning for, but that you really deserve,” Mr. George Andah, Chief Operating Officer, said in Accra at the official launch of operations.
“We have promised the people of Ghana that we will roll-out the most modern network with affordable products and services in the major regions of the country from day one, and today we are proud to tell you that we have kept our promise,” he added.
One and a half million people who have so far reserved numbers on the network can start redeeming their numbers and be able to make calls on the network, which is rolling-out services on the number code 023. Its services cover all ten regions, reaching 1,000 cities and 10,000 villages. Eighty percent of the network is 3G.
The network has a capacity of 10 million users at launch, with four active switches and state-of-the-art voice and data centres. Glo has established a 500-seating-capacity call centre that can receive up to 200,000 calls per day.
Touching on the challenges that hindered the early roll-out of the Glo network in the country, Mr. Andah explained that the company was busy rolling-out its infrastructure and preparing for a smooth take-off.
“Even though we faced daunting challenges, some of which were beyond our control, we were motivated by the physical and emotional encouragement from the ordinary Ghanaian — from the ordinary man on the street, to the captains of industry and top government officials,” he said.
Glo Mobile Ghana is kicking-off its services with an amazing product called ‘Good Day Ghana’ which enables all Glo subscribers to enjoy mouth-watering offerings — such as free unconditional 20Gp airtime daily for 100 days; free calls from midnight to 5:00am; bonus on in-coming calls; up to 100% bonus on recharges; and ‘sweet number’ which enables subscribers to call one special person at 2Gp per minute.
Mr. Adewale Sangowawa, Executive Director, Globacom, said the company chose to come into Ghana due to the country’s promising economy, and the fact that it is an English-speaking country. He expressed optimism that the company will deliver top-notch telecom services in the country.
He said the company will address the yawning gap in telecommunications services in the country by offering world-class innovative products and services that will improve the way Ghanaians live and work.
