GIHOC Distilleries’ Acting CEO Jones Borteye Applerh has disclosed a significant disparity between workforce expansion and production output at the state-owned manufacturer.
According to company records, staffing increased from 270 employees in 2020 to 520 by 2024 while annual carton production decreased from 625,000 to 275,000 during the same period.
Applerh stated: “When it comes to efficiency to boost our revenue, there’s a lot to be done.” He confirmed the company currently holds debts exceeding GH₵427 million, necessitating operational realignment. The CEO indicated forthcoming restructuring measures to align staffing with production requirements, though no specific plans were detailed.
Industry analysts observe these developments highlight operational challenges within Ghana’s state manufacturing sector. The disclosure comes amid government efforts to revitalize industrial operations under the Reset Programme.
Applerh emphasized that financial stabilization would require equipment modernization, debt restructuring, and workforce optimization. He noted these measures collectively would support GIHOC’s return to sustainable operations.
