While workers of the Government Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) are protesting over wage-related issues, those of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are up against government’s intention to privatize the country’s major power distributor.
GHOSPA has been battling the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ghana’s public sector wage regulator, over unfair placement on the single spine salary structure, payment of market premium and poor working conditions.
According to citifmonline.com, a private radio, the PUWU, to which the ECG staffs belong, says the action is in protest of what it describes as a “disrespectful attitude exhibited towards them by the Millennium Development Authority (MIDA).”
About a week ago, the PUWU embarked on a three-day nationwide demonstration to protest the privatization of ECG, demanding a review of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact, which they claimed had a road-map for massive lay-offs.
But MIDA has downplayed assertions that the MCC compact would impact negatively on the ECG and result in lay-offs.
“The reality is that the concession arrangement will create more jobs in the power sector,” a statement from the MIDA noted. Enditem
