Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has become the nation’s first state agency licensed for forensic cryptocurrency investigations, significantly boosting capabilities to combat digital financial crimes.

The license, obtained through partnership with the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA), enables EOCO to trace illicit crypto transactions, identify criminal wallets, and recover stolen virtual assets addressing a critical gap in Ghana’s anti-fraud arsenal.

Acting Executive Director Raymond Archer confirmed the license has already facilitated recovery of crime-linked crypto funds: “We can now track proceeds previously untraceable.”

The breakthrough comes amid surging crypto-related scams in Ghana, ranked among Africa’s top 10 adopters in a 2022 Chainalysis report. Transnational syndicates increasingly exploit Bitcoin and stablecoins for laundering, targeting victims across West Africa.

Strategic Implications

  • Cross-border collaboration: Enables cooperation with global crypto exchanges and blockchain networks

  • FATF compliance: Supports Ghana’s adherence to international anti-money laundering standards

  • Regional leadership: Positions Ghana ahead of peers like Nigeria and Kenya in crypto forensics

EOCO plans to extend training to the Ghana Police Service and Bank of Ghana’s Financial Intelligence Centre, building a coordinated national strategy against cyber-financial crimes. This proactive approach could set a regional precedent as Africa grapples with balancing crypto innovation and security.
