Ghana’s stock market closed its busiest trading session of the week on Friday, May 15, 2026, as total value on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) hit GH₵ 9.99 million in Session 7212, more than double Thursday’s GH₵ 4.94 million and the highest single-day turnover recorded across the five-day period.

A total of 1,464,714 shares changed hands during the session, with two counters dominating activity. Scancom PLC, trading as MTNGH, accounted for GH₵ 5.1 million of the day’s total value on a volume of 786,652 shares, making it the single largest contributor to the session’s outsized turnover. The NewGold exchange-traded fund followed with GH₵ 3.3 million in value from 6,725 units.

Despite the strong volume, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) slipped 12.52 points to close at 14,320.45, extending a gradual pullback from Monday’s weekly peak of 14,616. The GSE Financial Stocks Index (FSI) shed 3.37 points to settle at 8,068.95. Market capitalisation closed at GH₵ 264.8 billion, equivalent to approximately $23.5 billion.

Price movement remained narrow. Cal Bank PLC and Hords Plc on the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX) each added GH₵ 0.01, while Ecobank Transnational Inc., MTNGH, and the NewGold fund each declined by the same margin. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC also registered a GH₵ 0.01 gain, closing at GH₵ 33.00. The remaining 27 equities were unchanged.

The week’s trading pattern underscores a market where volume is increasingly concentrated in a handful of liquid names. MTNGH, Ecobank Transnational, and Cal Bank accounted for the majority of shares traded across all five sessions, reflecting limited depth beyond the top tier of listed companies.

The GSE-CI has gained 63.3% year to date, maintaining its position among the world’s top-performing equity markets in 2026.

“Strong gains on the Ghana Stock Exchange have increased appetite for equities and new listings,” GSE Managing Director Abena Amoah said earlier this week.
