GHACEM explains cement price disparities

The acting Commercial Director of GHACEM, Philip Archer says the disparities in the latest cement prices are due to transportation.

Earlier Wednesday morning, Philip Archer revealed to Bismark Brown on e.tv Ghana Breakfast TV that the distance between a location and the manufacturing city is the main cause for the differences.

“The reason why we are having this disparity is to do with the transportation and that is the basic difference”. He said.

“When you look at our recommended prices, the common denominator in our arriving at that will be our ex-factory price which is Ghc 15. 295”. He continued

The management of GHACEM Limited, the leading producer and supplier of cement in the country released a statement earlier which shows the disparity in prices.

In Accra the minimum end user price stated in the release is Ghc18.0 while the maximum price is Ghc 18.3.

One can purchase a bag of cement at Ghc 18 at a minimum and Ghc18.2 at a maximum in Tema, where the manufacturers are located.

Wa has the most expensive price tag. A bag of cement can be bought at Ghc 21.8 at a minimum and Ghc 22.0 at a maximum.

Though he admitted the country is not in a price control regime, he assured Ghanaians that there will be no hikes in prices due to the reliable distributors that GHACEM work with.

“We have this very good relationship with our distributors so as we keep interacting with them, we keep on ensuring that our distributors who are also responsible transfer that responsibility onto the retailers so that we can sell within the recommended price that we have actually published”. He said.

In a case where salesmen refuse to comply with the stipulated prices “we will bring it to the attention of the distributor who supplies the retailer and dialogue with them and ensure that they bring the prices down”.

He refused to disclose the ultimate punishment for a retailer who failed to reduce the price when reprimanded saying the distributors are very responsible and will comply with the published prices.
